In 1979 I acquired two of these jackets, five Beatles gold records, one platinum, three gold All Things Must Pass
sets, and one set of gold Bangla Desh albums. They were auctioned at Apple Records, and it was by private
invitation only. I was lucky enough to know the guy who bought them plus 10 sealed butcher records and other
items such as some sealed albums and EPs I bought.
A contractor in MA, I believe maybe the Boston or Weston area, named Robert bought the Harrison records and
three of the Beatles from Europe gold records. A dealer named Paul Garfunkel in NJ (met at Beatlefest) and his partner sold the other three for me. He also sold all three that Paul McCartney autographed for me after a concert,
and a nice picture from the video Paperback Writer.
I would like to get that back Pail G. if you see this. I would not mind my Queen picture as well. John Beach gave me that as a present and I was sad to sell that too.
We talked for about 10-12 minutes with Linda. I asked Paul if he knew about the auction and he did, but declined to
attend. He not only confirmed that there were 10 jackets there but the story of their plan of a short tour goes like this.
They planned a tour of several European countries, and one in the US. That was quickly shot down, and then the plan was The Royal Albert Hall. That went a little further but then it changed to a studio concert and having it televised.
Someone, and he did not know who, made 500 jackets, which is what the auctioneer at Apple said. Just like the giving away of clothes when Apple closed their boutique, they gave away the jackets. Ten of them survived.
So my friend picked up 10 butchers for ,000, and I offered him that for one. He declined. I also missed getting the master recordings for Pepper and four other records. That Scot who won them was sued by Capitol. Don't know what happened.
Was it Joe Pope who owned the record show SFF? He had one that was in poor condition. I told him the story and he should have taken care of it.
My platinum 45 Let It Be and two golds have a label on the back that I verified with Capitol in LA that they were authentic. The Let It Be went for ,100 which was John Lennons. I was there and offered it to the bidder forK. He turned it down. I think he said it was going to go to Dan Ackroyd. So I have met many interesting people in my life. Anybody who has dealt with me or knows me knows that I always try to have the accurate truth of what something is that I offer or what someone else may try and sell.
I would consider this fairly rare and a nice addition to a collection. It beats buying one of those Pepper outfits that look cheap and are not authentic.
Good luck.
