    Description

2009-4 ARCTIC OCEAN; Twilight of ARCTIC ICE – National Geographic Map Poster
The Arctic Ocean is Earth's smallest and least-explored ocean, but it the part of our world being most affected by global warming. As warming erodes the ice, scientists are mapping the Arctic floor more accurately than ever before. This is important because the submerged extension of each country's continental shelf will determine what each can claim of the anticipated oil and natural gas reserves that reside under the Arctic Ocean. The map-side of this study is a top-of-the-world view of Earth in a classic National Geographic topographical form with map insets showing shipping routes, energy prospects, and territorial claims. The reverse-side titled “Twilight of the Arctic Ice” is a beautiful poster dominated by a satellite view of the Arctic region with 8 map insets showing the retreat of the Arctic ice in steps from 1980 to 2008. Across the top is an illustration of how heat from the sun was reflected back and absorbed into the ice, both before global warming and after global warming, caused by excessive greenhouse gasses.
    Map is approximately 31" x 20".
The National Geographic is known for it's fine maps & detailed information.
