This 1st U.S. Small Cent, still shows Bold Feather Detail on the obverse, with moderate wear, and has a Real Nice Copper Nickel Tone. The reverse also has Nice Detail and moderate wear.
There were a combined 24.6 Million 1858 Flying Eagles made, between the two varieties. This Pre-Civil War Penny is 150+ years old, and was a Hoarded Coin even in its day. This

The ANA Grading Standards Book (Whitman) defines the Very Fine grade as: "OBVERSE: Breast shows considerable flatness. Some of the details are visible in feathers of the wings. Head is worn but bold. Thigh is smooth, but feathers in tail are nearly complete. REVERSE: Ends of leaves and bow are worn smooth."

The Flying Eagle Penny was the First U.S. Small Cent, and was issued by Congress in 1856. The original (2000) prototypes that were made in 1856 were sold directly to collectors, so the new coin actually made its debut to the nation in 1857. The 1856 is an Ultra Rare Date. The U.S. Mint set up booths on their front lawn in Philadelphia to sell the new Penny directly to the public. Scalpers re-sold the same coins for a premium, to people who didn't want to wait in the lines! They were a Hoarded Coin right from the start. Congress had not foreseen the collect-ability of these new coins, which caused major commerce shortages, that they were actually issued to fix! The Flying Eagle Cent only saw two years of commercial issue, in 1857 and 1858, before James Longacre switched the design to the Indian Head in 1859- the same year that Abe Lincoln ran for President. In 1861, the Civil War broke out, making Copper & Nickel (and The Flying Eagle Cent) even more scarce.
