AU (8: 3,3,2). The Snow-3 is the original striking of the 1856 Flying Eagle cent. These were struck on the regular production press as a simulated production run in late 1856. The coin is obviously not struck as a proof as there is some weakness on the eagle's head and tail and corresponding area on the wreath. There are very few marks. There is also strike-doubling on the date, eagle and some of the letters of the legend. All these attributes on this coin prove that the press run from this die pair, the Snow-3, are indeed a MS coins and not Proofs.
This is graded as a MS coin by PCGS and attributed as the Snow-3 on the holder. As such it is important for the desirability of this coin. An AU55 Snow-3 graded with the MS format just sold for close to K. This coin admittedly has strike problems, but these are accounted for in the price. It would be a K coin otherwise.
This coin was the key to a complete AU58 set of Flying Eagle and Indian cents. There are two others graded AU58 by PCGS in the MS format and these will be much more if they come on the market.
